The following is a letter submitted to the editor of the Madison, NJ Eagle on October 21, 2017

To the Editor:

Over the years, people have asked me if I thought if it really mattered which Council candidates won. After all, they would say, we are all from Madison and we all are concerned about the same things. In the 30 years that I have been involved with Madison government, I have come to the conclusion that it does seriously matter who represents us at the Council table which is why I am voting for Dr. Ronald Hendrickson and Denis Schreiber.

I have personally known everyone who has served on the Council over the past 30 years and, on the whole, they have been honest and thoughtful. They have, however, made some decisions that have had significant, and sometimes extremely detrimental effects on Madison so, in my opinion, yes, it really does matter who  represents us at the Council table.

It is the Council that determines who serves on the very important Planning and Zoning Boards.

It is the Council that sets electric rates and oversees the operation of the Electric Utility. It is the Council that determines the number of police, fire and public works employees. It is the Council that oversees the major infrastructure repairs and maintenance. It is the Council that determines capital expenditures, tax rates and how much debt to incur. You and I pay for bad Council decisions in our property taxes.

I believe that Hendrickson and Schreiber are clearly the best people to represent us at the Council table. Please strongly consider voting for them on November 7.

Gary E Ruckelshaus
Former Mayor and Councilman
