Madison, NJ News — Last Monday's Borough Council meeting was a real "hum dinger."

It seems as though the entire town was in attendance. Although some were there to rightfully honor and cheer on the proclamation for Madison's Nature Nuts program, which is in its 40th year, many more came to comment on the increasing problem of bamboo plantings causing problems for neighboring properties that just don't want the bamboo to encroach on their yards. Removing it can cost thousands of dollars, and judging from the number of comments by the public at this meeting, it seems as though it is not a small problem.

Apparently, the Democrat-controlled Borough Council balked on the issue and punted the ball to the Department of Health. Watch the rather curt treatment of Madison resident Terry Romano, whose property has been affected by a neighbor's encroaching bamboo.

An entire contingent was also there to comment on and discuss the petition to save the recently closed movie theater in Madison. You can watch Republican candidate Ron Hendrickson's comments on the issue here.

The movie theater closed on May 29th, to the surprise of the entire community, apparently including the Mayor and Borough Council. Although we understand and respect private property and free markets, don't you think that one role of our elected officials is to anticipate events that could have a huge impact on the community and come up with some better free market-driven solutions?

Do you have an opinion on all this? Feel free to contact candidates Ron Hendrickson and Denis Schreiber and make your opinion known to them. Or you can contact the MRC directly wtih your comments.
