Last Wednesday about 50 local residents attended a town-hall style “Meet the Candidates” night, hosted by the Madison Republican Committee. The meeting began with opening remarks by the new Madison Republican Committee Chairperson, Mary Wilson, followed by Events Chair Suzanne Schreiber. Ms Schreiber noted the excessive “groupthink” on the Borough Council as well as the pursuit of personal agendas rather than resident concerns. She urged all residents to pay attention to what is going on in Madison and to participate in any way possible.
The first guest speaker was Chief Lou DeRosa from the Madison Fire Department. He reiterated the message he gave at the last Borough Council meeting about the fire department being understaffed and unsuccessful in recruiting volunteers. The Borough’s underfunding of fire department and police department staffing leaves the Borough at risk. He took several questions from an interested and engaged audience.
John Krickus, Morris County Commissioner Director, then moderated a series of presentations from various community leaders, including Sheriff Jim Gannon and Morris County Surrogate Heather Darling. Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi spoke about the mission of her office and took several questions about election integrity and vote by mail ballots. Attendees seemed to agree this topic requires further discussion.
State Senator Anthony Bucco emphasized his availability to all Madison residents, especially Republicans. He fielded several questions about affordable housing regulations. He was followed by State Assemblywoman Aura Dunn and State Assemblyman Christian Barranco, both staunch Republicans and very excited that, due to redistricting, they will now be representing our town. The last speaker was Morris County Commissioner Tayfun Selen who spoke about how financially well-run Morris county is and ways the County is investing in parks and in the Morris County Community College vocational school.
Chairwoman Wilson closed the meeting with thanks and encouragement for residents to consider volunteering with the Madison Republican Committee and/or run for Borough Council or Mayor.
